Kyoto protokol
The protocol, adopted by the 159 countries present, sets legally binding targets for cutting the emissions of six greenhouse gases—mostly pollutants caused by burning coal, oil and other hydrocarbon fuels—by an aggregate 5.2% from 1990 levels during the years 2008 to 2012. (članak iz The Economist)

potpisnici: http://unfccc.int/files/essential_background/kyoto_protocol/application/pdf/kpstats.pdf Kyoto Protokol je stupio na snagu 16. veljače. Ratificiran od strane 156 zemalja (ali nisu Australija, Hrvatska, Kazahstan, Monaco, SAD i Zambija).
Potpisnici Protokola su se obavezale pratiti emisije stakleničkih plinova. Zemlje potpisnice Aneksa B Protokola su se obavezale smanjiti emisije u odnosu na baznu godinu, tijekom prvog budžetskog perioda 2008-12.
One zemlje koje to ne uspiju mogu nadokupiti dozvole za emitiranje više emisija od onih zemalja koje su smanjile više nego što su trebale (Emission Trading), ili mogu uložiti u projekte smanjenja emisija u drugim zemljama Aneksa B (Joint Implementation) ili zemljama koji nisu dio Aneksa (Clean Development Mechanism).
